GCSE vocabulary on Arabicpod101

This post has been included on my new blog: http://welovearabic.wordpress.com
Building sentences with videos
These brilliant video podcasts, available on itunes and their website, are a great way to learn vocabulary by associating it with sweet pictures and stories. First you're shown individual words with pictures, then a short video with a whole sentence, and at the end is a test where you're shown the video and have a few seconds to say the sentence before you're shown it again. The language is clear, standard Arabic.

By topic
* Daily routine: getting ready in the morning

* Daily routine: relaxing in the evening

* Transport: walking, bus, car, plane

* Classroom phrases 1

* Classroom phrases 2

* Talking about technology: phones, SMS, emails and surfing the net

General vocabulary
* Top 20 Arabic verbs 1 - do, make, want, love, use
* Top 20 Arabic verbs 2
* Top 20 Arabic verbs 3
* Top 20 Arabic verbs 4

Vocabulary with pictures
These videos are more simple: just a series of pictures introducing vocabulary which you're tested on at the end. But they're still a really nice way to pick up a few more words or test yourself, with some relaxing jazz background music!

* Vegetables
* Fruit
* Transport
* Places around town
* Parts of the body
* Cooking in the kitchen

* In a bookshop
* Describing a room
* Office

Key vocabulary in sample sentences
NB. Egyptian pronunciation!

These videos are a bit harder (described by Arabicpod101 as "beginners" whereas the ones above are for "absolute beginners" - I'd describe these as pre-intermediate as opposed to beginners) and introduce you to sample sentences illustrating the new vocabulary. The sample sentences will include a lot of words you don't know, especially verbs: don't worry about that, but just try to follow the pronunciation with the help of the subtitles and listen out for the key word.

* Positive emotions
* Negative emotions
* At the table: yum yum... hungry and thirsty...
* Natural disasters
* Weather
* Sports
* More sports
* Daily activities 1
* Daily activities 2

Arabic language podcasts available from Al-Jazeera

This article has been  moved to our new site at welovearabic.wordpress.com

This page lists all the podcasts available either from the Al-Jazeera website or from Itunes.

The Arabic podcasts that are available are:

When you find a podcast on Itunes that you're interested in, it's worth looking up the title on the Al-Jazeera website as you might just find the whole transcript of the programme!

    Jehan al-Sadat interview - Al-Jazeera

    This long and detailed interview with Jehan al-Sadat, the widow of former Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat, is available as a video on the Al-Jazeera website or as an audio only podcast from Itunes.

    The Al-Jazeera series is called Shahid 3ala al-3asr (شاهد على العصر) and the website offers the full transcripts of the interview and the introductory prologue in the first episode. Wonderful! The interviewer speaks clear fusha, and while she responds in Egyptian dialect, it is clear and not too fast, so if you have an idea of Egyptian pronunciation, it should be possible to follow for learners of Arabic who are more familiar with Modern Standard than with Egyptian.

    Deutsche Welle Arabic podcasts

    This site details all the Arabic language podcasts created by the German TV channel Deutsche Welle. They're easy to find on Itunes, and probably on other podcast programmes too.

    نادي الشباب

    العلوم والتقنية

    المنبر الحر

    الرياضة اليوم

    عالم الاقتصاد

    نافذة ثقافية

    حياة عصرية

    الدراسة والمستقبل

    مجتمع وحوار

    Podcasts for advanced students

    * The Arabic PodClass
    This is in English and Arabic, and seems to be aimed at intermediate students: who have the basics and are developing their language independently. Covers grammar and culture: songs, poems, proverbs. Available on Itunes and the website.

    The following podcasts, which are purely in Arabic, will be challenging for most AS and A2 students, but are good to have on in the background to get used to the rhythm and intonation of the spoken language, and try to follow the gist, without catching every word. The advantage of podcasts over live TV or radio is obviously that you can very easily rewind, fast forward and listen to the same snippet over and over until it makes sense.

    * BBC Xtra

    * Arabic Circle at the University of Chicago's Center for Middle Eastern Studies
    Weekly lecture in Arabic on highbrow topics covering politics, literature, arts.

    I've listened to the talk by Jordanian former MP Toujan al-Faisal about the history of Jordanian democracy, and it was relatively easy to follow, at a gentle pace and in MSA. When she pronounces something in a Levantine way, she tends to correct herself, aware that she should speak clearly and in a standard way for her university audience. She also drops in a lot of English, making it interesting to compare the phrases with the Arabic equivalents that she also uses.

    Podcasts for beginners'

    Ah, the internet is a wonderful thing when it comes to learning languages, especially the world of podcasts. Here are a couple of recommended podcasts for beginners:

    Arabic Pod
    available free on Itunes, or from their website
    Lovingly created podcasts aimed at teaching colloquial Arabic through very short, amusing dialogues. The author makes podcasts for every level and they're clearly labelled, so you can progress easily from the beginners' ones through to the higher levels.
    It's made by a UK-based Levantine Arab, with a sense of humour and quirky choice of topics. He is also very good at explaining the differences between Levantine dialect and standard (written) Arabic. He has a different guest each week, which means you get to hear lots of different voices. The website offers PDF transcripts and exercises for every lesson, though you have to log in to see them. This man is a legend.

    Available free on Itunes or from the website. Over 800 lessons for 3 different levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

    Another brilliant podcast with lessons at various levels. Access to transcripts and additional material to support the audio lessons is available through the website at a subscription fee (different packages vary from $4 to $26 a month). The website also offers a daily Arabic word of the day email.

    Lessons are offered for 4 levels: absolute beginner (no previous knowledge of Arabic), beginner, intermediate (lessons coming soon) and advanced. You can also browse the selections by context: student, business, work, travel, living in an Arabic country or family. There are also video lessons available, with good quality pictures, subtitles and nice soothing background music!

    You only need to give an email address to login for a 7 day trial, during which you can download 10 pdf files of notes to accompany the audio. I only looked at the advanced level lessons (13 audio blogs on cultural, history and geography topics), but was very impressed by the detail in the notes: the full transcript in Arabic, English, vowelled Arabic, a detailed vocabulary list and sample sentences using the vocabulary. If the beginners' lessons are as good then this is a fabulous resource!
