Friday, January 16, 2009

What's your name?

What’s your name?
maa ism-ak? (when you’re asking a boy)
maa ism-ik? (when you’re asking a girl)
My name is ….
ism-ee … (doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl)

Practice this in Youtube Arabic lesson 2

Where are you from?

Where are you from?
min ayna anta? (when you’re asking a boy)
min ayna anti? (when you’re asking a girl)
I'm from ….
ana min … (doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl)

note that...
anta = you (male)

anti = you (female)
ana = I (no gender)

I'm Scottish, me

ana bariTanee I (am) British
ana inglizee I (am) English

You can ask someone if they are British as follows:
anta bariTanee? (are) you British?
or if you’re speaking to a girl,
anti bariTaniyah? (are) you British?
anti iTaliyah? (are) you Italian?

Reply with yes or no
na3m, ana ingliziyah yes, I’m English
laa, ana faransee! no, I’m French!
laa, ana iskotlandiyah! no, I’m Scottish!

These are two extremely useful words:
laa no
na3m yes
